Field trip to Georgia…
Tomorrow morning I have the privilege of traveling to Cherry Log, Georgia to spend a couple of hours discussing the ‘Art of Preaching/Teaching’ with a gentleman named Dr. Fred Craddock. (I’d be interested to know if any of you have ever heard of Dr. Craddock)
Among his many accolades includes the fact that Newsweek named him as one of the top 10 preachers in America a few years ago. Author of many books, I’ve only read one, his autobiography. I believe he is 82 years old.I met him very briefly this past spring at the Fred B. Craddock Lectureship on Preaching at Johnson Bible College. Dr. Craddock is a graduate and former professor of JBC.
Dr. Craddock is known for a ‘new homiletic’. A style of preaching that involves 3 distinct features:
We’re going loaded with questions…we may stay the whole day if Dr. Craddock will let us.
I’ll let you know how it goes…
Dr. Craddock is known for a ‘new homiletic’. A style of preaching that involves 3 distinct features:
- An inductive style…in which the preacher re-creates for the listener the inductive process of study used to create the sermon itself.
- A sermon should seek to create an experience for the listener, rather than simply appealing to a linear logic. In Craddock’s style, the listeners are active participants in the sermon by virtue of the sermon form itself, which enables the hearer to "finish" the sermon that is intentionally left open-ended.
- Craddock emphasizes that the form or genre of the biblical passage to be preached should shape in some way the form taken by the sermon.
We’re going loaded with questions…we may stay the whole day if Dr. Craddock will let us.
I’ll let you know how it goes…

Doesn't everyone have to read Craddock in your preaching class?

I've always enjoyed Craddock. Never met him, but read some books. Saw some videos.
