All things New York…

When we travel to NYC we like to make ‘the list’, the places that we want to see at some point during our time in the city. Sometimes the items put on the list are things we’ve visited before, others are places we’ve heard about and figure we should experience, and some are specific toward one particular family member…

Here are some of those from this past trip…

Some of you are familiar with my 14 year old daughter Meghan’s love of the musical Godspell. Probably for 10 years or so, since we were part of a production at Purdue, she has loved all things ‘Godspell’, (including one birthday around the age of 4 or 5 that was a ‘Godspell Party’, no kids her age, just the cast from Godspell).

Well the theatrical version of Godspell is filmed throughout the city of New York, and the scene near the beginning of the movie is filmed in the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. Of course, Meghan had to have a few moments with the fountain…

For my son Matthew, who is entering the University of Tennessee this fall to study music, specifically jazz, it only made sense that we visited the landmark jazz club established in NYC in 1949 named, named after Charlie "Yardbird" Parker…
Amazing place inside, too expensive to buy anything, but we pretended we might so we could look around...

The High Line is a 1.45-mile park built on a section of the former elevated freight railroad spur which runs along the lower west side of Manhattan; it has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway. My architectural son Michael, led us on a tour of this beautiful greenway. (It’s only halfway finished) It was fascinating…

For my wife, (and really for the whole family) the Strand Bookstore is always a place for us to spend some substantial time…(and this year we ran into to Troy Jackson and his son Jacob there…how ‘bout that). Strand is “home to 18 miles of books”…I can’t decide if Strand’s or Powell’s in Portland is my favorite bookstore of all time (sorry McKay fans)…

And what is almost always my favorite site from any trip to NYC, my family on the Staten Island Ferry looking back at the city itself…(they hate we I sneak up behind them and take pics) It truly is a state of mind…

I can't wait until my kids are old enough to enjoy NYC. We're going to try them out in the big cities in 2011... gonna do 2 days in Chicago in March and hopefully NYC for a couple of days in the summer. Connor really wants to see the statue of liberty and central park.

thanks for posting all of the updates... listening to a little Billy Joel right now!

Powell's. :)

I don't really know. Been to both. They're amazing. McKay's was great but nothing like those 2.
