Buechner Institute at King College…

I’m sure I have mentioned in the past on this blog the influence the writings of Frederick Buechner have had on my faith and my life.

I was 30 years old before I was introduced to the ‘grace-filled’ writings of Buechner by, a then college student at Purdue, Wes Zell.

From his memoir of sorts, Sacred Journey, to the would be saint Godric, to an unbelievable perspective on the life of Jacob in Son of Laughter, to the daily readings of Listening to Your Life, to the holy man named Leo Bebb in the Book of Bebb, Buechner’s writings have helped to shape my thoughts on faith and God, and have brought to me an awareness I don’t know if I would have found anywhere else.

This Monday, January 28th, at King College in Bristol, TN is the inaugural event for the newly formed Buechner Institute at King.

From their web site…
The Buechner Institute at King College is devoted to exploring the intersections and collisions of faith and culture that define our times.

Dedicated to the work and example of Frederick Buechner, the Institute examines the ways in which faith informs art and public life.

There are six of us traveling over to Bristol on Monday. The day begins at 10am and involves Buechner and others speaking throughout the day and ends around 10pm with a concert by Michael Card. Click here for the schedule.

If you’d like to go please let me know…we always have room for more. mnelson@crossingsknoxville.com

One of my favorite Buechner quotes…

"Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and the pain of it no less than the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace."

Bill just got me Son of Laughter. Being that my name is Jacob, I was very interested and excited to read it. I have never read Buechner before, but I'm sure I'll pick up the rest of what he's written. It was fantastic. I couldn't put it down. He truly is an artist.
