Looking through the window…

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” It’s been said that if you understand these words you can understand the Bible.

That’s a lot of pressure… How do you begin to explain that which must in the end be accepted as the beginning of all explanation?

We’re beginning this week at Crossings the study of the narrative of John. This unbelievably detailed eyewitness account of life of Jesus. (we’re spending 12 weeks this fall & 12 weeks in the spring entering into this story)

I’m so stinking excited…what an amazing opportunity at this stage of this faith community’s life to look at the life of this man who is God who we want to follow and be like.

Oh, the things we will learn…oh, the questions we will ask…

I preached a sermon on this a little while back. During my prep, I learned something about when John uses the word "Word". As we all know, it comes from "logos". To the reader, this could mean two different things:

To the Jewish reader, this was God's spoken word. When God said, "Let there be light" this was THAT logos. It was his literal word to man.

To the greek, this was the logic (eh, get it?) behind the universe. So to say Jesus was the word, or logic, was to say he was the very thing that held it all together and originally brought it into existance.

So in using this one word, John unites both the jew and the gentile. He brings humanity together. And that one word is Jesus.
