The right word...
I’m continuing to reflect on the first few weeks of this faith community we call Crossings. The world of church planting carries with it certain expectations. Expectations of method, of growth, of development, etc. (Please don’t take my words to mean that expectations are not a good thing)
We were talking about what God is creating in this community and one of our leaders, Kevin Reeve shared this little anecdote…
The Irish writer James Joyce often took to walking about town in the afternoon after a busy morning spent writing.
One day he happened upon a fellow writer, one who enjoyed some popularity in that day but faded quickly thereafter.
The men often shared updates on the progress of their current projects, and Joyce's peer happily stated he had completed a couple new chapters that morning.
"How much have you written today, Joyce?" he asked.
Joyce confidently replied, "one word."
"One word?" the man exclaimed. "How many years will it take you to complete a book at that pace!"
Joyce was unshaken. "Ah," he said, "but it was the right word."
That describes pretty well our feeling after 12 weeks of Crossings…we feel like we’re focusing and trying to spend our time, doing what we do day in and day out, week in and week out trying to write the ‘right word’.
I Corinthians 3
"10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."
