Making a community weep...
I went to a pre-conference session on Monday when we arrived at the conference here in Orlando. From 1pm to 4:30pm I listened Rick Rusaw talk about ‘becoming an externally focused church’, really good stuff. The question he asked that was most impactful is one many have asked in a variety of ways:
“If your church vanished would your community weep?”
What do you think of the question? Is it a fair question to ask? How to you qualify your answers? At what point in the life of a faith community are you allowed to ask that?
It was a good session…it is obvious he is a gifted leader. He is the pastor at Lifebridge Church in Longmont, CO
Oh, by the way…got up early this morning, shot a 4 under at the Turkeynator II Disc Golf Course. (I have no idea where they got the name) All is good.

Mark,
That is really good questions to ask our communities; I was thinking the other day why we focus so much in planning Sunday, in planning church activities instead of community activities? Good question!!! By the way you and your family are invited to join us in the Cinco de Mayo Festival(May 5th) to dance some salsa!!! and of course eat international food....Think about it!!! could be a goo fellowship time....- at 3:34 PM said...
Honestly, I can't think of an institution (maybe, in certain areas, a sports franchise) whose absence would cause a community to weep. For that matter, I am not sure I know of a community that is cohesive enough to weep together on any issue. Could be on to something there. . .

Well i know I would weep if our neighborhood Ruby Tuesdays closed Kevin. :)
Sadly, I don't know of any churches that fit this bill... I do however know of a few that I wish would leave the community.
