A little surreal...
My oldest son’s High School soccer season ended last night. They advanced from their district (the first time in a very long time) by winning a game against huge rival Oak Ridge last week. (Talk about stressful, two 10 minute overtimes, two 5 minute sudden death overtimes, and then penalty kicks)
It’s been a great season for the boys. (And for the record, only one broken nose)
They ended last night by losing to perennial soccer power Farragut, always one of the best in the state.
When I was in youth ministry for 6 ½ years Farragut is where the church was located. I spent many a night at that field watching kids from the youth group play soccer games, run in track meets, play in football games over that 6 ½ year period.
And last night, there I was, back in that same stadium watching my own son play.
It was a little surreal…and made me feel just a little old.

well Mark, yesterday was my 37 birthday and a friend told me, "Miguel let me take you out of your bubble" so I asked him,- what bubble? I don't know what you mean?. "well, - he answered, the youth bubble, Miguel you are becoming older. Great!!! Let me tell you I am enjoying this older years because I feel closer to Abba, not because I am not mature...NOT at all!!! I think that some times I even react like a little child...but because of the season I am living. What a great gift to be able to watch your own son playing soccer? a great thought!

I don't know if you remember, but that's where Craig brought me to meet you and the other guys to leave for Guys Night Out in Spring of 1992. It was a soccer game at Farragut. Daniel was playing. Anyways, that was the first time I'd ever met you.
We proceeded to spend the night at Dave Curry's dorm room at Milligan...all of us...in that tiny room...on the floor...and I didn't know any of you.
Then you took us to play ultimate at a park the next day. That was the first time I'd played ultimate. Now my own youth group is addicted to it.
Coming full circle is a neat feeling.- at 8:28 AM Mark Nelson said...
