Some Holy Talk....

Saturday was an absolutely gorgeous day here in East Tennessee…a little disc golf early in the morning, my son’s soccer game at noon, and then my family and I drove to Asheville, North Carolina to spend the night at our family’s favorite chain of hotels, Country Inn & Suites (the best ‘free’ breakfast anywhere).

To travel from Knoxville to Asheville on I-40 you pass through some of the most beautiful mountains you’ll see anywhere. It’s about 70 mile stretch of road from Newport, TN to the west side of Asheville.
In the midst of those winding turns through the Smoky Mountains some incredibly ‘Holy Talk’ happened in our vehicle.

It began with “So did all these mountains happen during the flood?”, and progressed to “Okay, how did the tectonic plates play into all of this?”. Then began the use of words like “Pangaea” & “intelligent design” and continued on and on to questions like, “So, are we talking about 7 literal days?”, and “What if much of Genesis is poetry?”.

During that wonderful discussion I learned a couple of things….
First of all, my wife and three children (17, 14 & 10 years old) are much, much smarter than I am…(I guess I should have paid more attention in science class).
And second of all, there may not be a more important thing that I could ever do for my kids than to teach them to hunger for truth, and seek the reality of God for the entirety of their lives.

The whole day, (including a late night soak in the hotel’s hot tub) in the words of my daughter Meghan, was “Superly Good”. What a great way to spend a birthday.
