“Admit we just don’t want to do it…”

Below is a video from Stephen Colbert’s ‘The Colbert Report’ a parody of personality-driven political shows....

It’s such a strong take on Christmas, caring for people, and the words of Jesus…I don’t post it with the intention of it being a political statement as much as it is a ‘Jesus statement’…

This is really an inappropriate post, from a pulpit perspective, on politics. You really need to think about (and refrain from) posting on politics. Because Jesus was totally apolitical. He only said one thing about the govt. Give unto Ceasars what is his. But he said a whole lot about the church. It's the church that has the responsibility to help the poor and feed the masses. Not the government. I hope you don't preach this from the pulpit.

I'm sorry you took from the post that it was a 'statement on politics'...I tried to be clear in the preface statements that it wasn't my intent. I don't 'preach' politics, I guarantee you no one has ever accused me of that... The word 'partisan' is not even a part of my vocabulary...

What the clip does is get us to consider taking seriously the words of Jesus when it comes to loving people and caring for the poor...

If taking care of the poor and treating people the way Jesus treated them is simply seen as a 'political statement' then that's the result of a messed up culture. It never becomes a 'political issue' for me, but always about a 'Jesus issue'.

I hope I 'preach' the words of Jesus and His call to take all His words seriously from the 'pulpit'...not because of politics, but because of who Jesus is and what He calls us to do.

Thanks for posting...

Mark, very good response to the comment. Kelli, I respectfully disagree with your assessment that this was a political statement. That maybe because I know Mark and know that, as he said, being too political is the last thing someone could accuse him of. Yes, Colbert makes the issue political. But that is the premise of his show. If you missed the power and convinction and truth of his words because of politically sensitivity, I am sorry. Because the truth is, your point about it being the role of the church to take care of the poor is the exact point he was making.

Kelli, I don't particularly like Colbert...I don't really like politics. I attend Crossings and want to attest to the fact that Mark NEVER preaches politics from the pulpit. If he did, I wouldn't come back to Crossings. If he says he is looking at this video from a Jesus perspective, he is.

Maybe watching the video again with a different paradigm is in order. Take the politics out of it and listen to the words. Do they line up with what Jesus says in the Bible? If so, then it's not so much about WHO said the words. It's more about what was said and is it the Truth?
