A day at the feast…
In the words of Yortuk and Georg Festrunk, what a ‘wild & crazy’ day at Crossings yesterday…(Okay, who knows that 1977 TV reference?)
In our studying of John’s narrative of the life of Jesus we were studying chapter 7 yesterda--- Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles or Feast of Booths (Think Boomsday with a lot more religious significance).
We reconfigured the stage (so that it went over the top of the seats about 10 rows out into the crowd), had Sukkots throughout the auditorium (PCV pipe booths) handed out Lulavs (palm branches) and Etrogs (slices of oranges), had two huge candelabras placed in the middle of the crowd, and witnessed the first Jewish belly dancing in the history of Crossings (notice I said ‘first’).
Honestly, it’s hard to describe in writing the extent of the chaos in the room yesterday. But it was some of the most ‘Holy Chaos’ I’ve ever experienced.
Jesus was the greatest teacher ever, and for us to enter into the story of John 7, to experience a portion of the elements of the feast, and to try and imagine Jesus’ words in verse 37: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink” in the context that they were spoken was a very powerful experience.
