One more about Rich…
Thanks to those that posted thoughts about Rich Mullins and the effect he and his music has had on your life. It was great to hear so many stories…I promised a few weeks ago to post my favorite Mullins’ lyrics…I thought this would probably be the appropriate time.
I couldn’t reduce it to 10, so I’m going with 15. These are in no particular order...
What did I leave out? What are your favorites?
But when I leave I want to go out like Elijah
With a whirlwind to fuel my chariot of fire
And when I look back on the stars
It'll be like a candlelight in Central Park
-“Elijah”
Jacob, he loved Rachel and Rachel, she loved him
And Leah was just there for dramatic effect”
-“Jacob and 2 Women”
And her sky is just a bandit
Swinging at the end of a hangman's noose
'Cause he stole the moon and must be made to pay for it
And her friends say, "My, that's tragic"
She says, "Especially for the moon"
-“Jacob and 2 Women”
And the moon is a sliver of silver
Like a shaving that fell on the floor of a Carpenter's shop
-“The Color Green”
I can't see how You're leading me unless You've led me here
Where I'm lost enough to let myself be led
-“Hard to Get”
Surrender don't come natural to me
I'd rather fight You for something
I don't really want
Than to take what You give that I need
-“Hold Me Jesus”
And the countryside was pocked
With all of those mail pouch posters
Thrown up on the rotting sideboards of
These rundown stables like the one that Christ was born in
When the old world started dying
-“Land of My Sojourn”
And I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am
I did not make it, no it is making me
It is the very truth of God and not the invention of any man
-“Creed”
How the Lord takes by its corners this old world
And shakes us forward and shakes us free
To run wild with the hope
-“Calling Out Your Name”
There's more that rises in the morning
Than the sun
And more that shines in the night
Than just the moon
-“If I Stand”
Jesus listened to the song
That the captive children used to sing
They were singin'
‘My Deliverer is coming - my Deliverer is standing by…’
-“My Deliverer”
You stand beyond the reach
Of our vain imaginations
Our misguided piety
The heavens stretch to hold You
And deep cries out to deep
-“Nothing is Beyond You”
And everybody used to tell me big boys don't cry
Well I've been around enough to know that that was the lie
That held back the tears in the eyes of a thousand prodigal sons
-“Growing Young”
And may peace rain down from Heaven
Like little pieces of the sky
Little keepers of the promise
Falling on these souls
This drought has dried
-“Peace”
And if I were a painter I do not know which I'd paint
The calling of the ancient stars or assembling of the saints
-“Here in America”

Oh, You did not have a home
There were places You visited frequently
You took off Your shoes and scratched Your feet
'Cause you knew that the whole world belongs to the meek
But You did not have a home
No, You did not have a home
~ "You did not have a home"
But behold the love
He has given
It remains
In the hearts of the children
Who will love while the nations rage
While the nations rage

are you KIDDING me???
I've always thought that was "Something of the saints". Assembling is so much better!- at 10:08 PM Meriam said...
We got our son, Aiden's, name from "Let Mercy Lead." It will be fun teaching him the song when he is old enough to understand what it means.
Let mercy lead
Let love be the strength in your legs
And in every footprint that you leave
There'll be a drop of grace- at 7:55 AM jason said...
And we both feel lost
But I remember what Susan said
How love is found in the things we've given up
More than in the things that we have kept
And ain't it funny what people say
And ain't it funny what people write
And ain't it funny how it hits you so hard, In the middle of the night
- What Susan Said
They say you taught a lame man how to dance
When he had never stood without a crutch
Well, here am I Lord, holding out my withered hands
And I'm just waiting to be touched
- Jesus
Mom and Daddy stayed up too late last night
Oh I guess they got carried away in the Christmas candlelight
And you gotta get up ~ you gotta get up ~ you gotta get up
It's Christmas morning

And now the night is fading and the storm is past
And everything that could be shaken was shaken
And all that remains is all I ever really had
What I'd have settled for
You've blown so far away
What You brought me to
I thought I could not reach
And I came so close to giving up
But You never did give up on me

"And the wrens have returned and they're nesting
In the hollow of that oak where his heart once had been
And he lifts up his arms in a blessing for being born again"

And this road she is a woman. She was made from a rib cut from the sides of these mountains...
Oh, these great sleeping Adams who are lonely even here in Paradise, longing for somebody to kiss 'em.

Well, who's that man who thinks He's a prophet?
Well, I wonder if He's got something up His sleeve
Where's He from?
Who is His daddy?
There's rumors He even thinks Himself a king
Of a kingdom of paupers
Simpletons and rogues
The whores all seem to love Him
And the drunks propose a toast
And they say, "Surely God is with us.
--"Surely God Is With Us."
I would also add the line after you stopped on "Hard To Get"
"And so You've been here all along I guess"- at 4:08 PM Meriam said...
Someone sent Ron this great link to the 20 Countdown Magazine's tribute to Rich. It's 90 minutes of an interview with Rich intermingled with his best music.
