Monica and I were fortunate enough to attend the Tennessee/Southern Mississippi game on Saturday night at Neyland Stadium here in Knoxville, (thanks to Brad and Rose for the incredible tickets). Our invitation included some ‘mighty fine’ tailgating just 100 yards or so from the stadium and seats on the 50-yard line. It was a great game, UT won, and we managed to beat the traffic home.
For those of you outside the south, (and this comes from a northerner), it’s hard to imagine the degree of intensity that comes with college football in the south.
I used to think I could compare it to the fervor that is attached to Indiana High School Basketball, you know, the whole movie “Hoosiers” and all. But, honestly, it’s just not a fair comparison.

I know you may think you’re a ‘fan’ of your team…but until you stand the whole game with a UT football player puppet on your hand (a 39 year old puppet, signed by Philip Fulmer) and sing Rocky Top at the top of your lungs for over 3 hours, you are NOT a true fan.

As a transplanted Yankee, I do all of my shopping and errands in Nashville on game days. Even on a Sunday afternoon the week before Christmas, the mall is empty, except in the television section of Sears- the handful of people forced to work that day gather to watch this thing they call "football".

I have to say that free tickets to all home games was one of my favorite things about being an undergrad. Maybe if I get my internship there, I'll get free tickets again. :) I hope.

Wow, ya, I'm FROM the south, and I thought I was a fan until I read this entry!

I still tear up a little when the team runs through the "T"
