“Art makes us see…”

In our community at Crossings, we place an incredibly high value on the arts and imagination. We believe we are all created to create.

Bill Wolf, our worship/arts guy on staff, created something called Easter Stories and Songs, 10 original songs along with a book, also written by Bill, that enters us into the story of Jesus. Along with Bill’s creation, Tony Sobota created 4 original visual pieces that went with the book and songs.

All three creations (songs, book, art) are simply amazing.

We celebrated Good Friday with 8 of the 10 songs and 3 of the 4 paintings at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens with 150+ in attendance, and then concluded with the last 2 songs and the unveiling of the last painting on Easter morn. (I will post some pics from the Gardens later today)

I read a quote a couple of weeks ago from Paul Klee, a Swiss painter. He said, “Art does not reproduce what we see. It makes us see.”

I have no doubt that the artists in our community are doing just that: making us see.

Regardless of the form the art takes…as we are pulled into the flow of imagination, something important and different happens to us.

It’s something different than watching a story unfold in a movie, it is ourselves becoming part of the story…entering in, so that we see differently…in a way that changes us.

By giving us Easter Stories and Songs…Bill & Tony have given us a ‘new creation’ by which to enter into this story…this story of God, this story of the Bible, this one story, from beginning to end of God putting His family back together.
