Moving the horizons of possibility…

I have an initial meeting in 35 minutes to discuss an opportunity we have a Crossings to launch an ‘arts camp/academy’ here in Knoxville.

We are in discussions to partner with
TribeOne here in Knoxville in a way that allows some of the gifted artists in our Crossings community to create something here in the city of Knoxville that can, 'move the horizons of possibility'...

That phrase, ‘move the horizons of possibility’ comes from Andy Crouch’s book “Culture Making”, a great read. Here are some of his words that are working on me pretty good as we explore this opportunity:

So do you want to make culture?

Find a community, a small group who can lovingly fuel your dreams and puncture your illusions. Find friends and form a family who are willing to see grace at work in one another’s lives, who can discern together which gifts and which crosses each has been called to bear. Find people who have a holy respect for power and a holy willingness to spend their power alongside the powerless. Find some partners in the wild and wonderful world beyond church doors.

And then, together, make something of the world.

For the basic thing we are invited to do with our cultural power is to ‘spend it alongside those less powerful than ourselves’. The more customary phrase would be ‘spend it on behalf of the powerless’, but that is not the way power works in God’s economy. The way to spend cultural power is to open up for others the opportunity to create new cultural goods, adding our resources to theirs to increase their chance of moving the horizons of possibility for some community.

Hi Mr. Nelson,

My name is Brittany and I am wondering if you are the same Mr. Nelson who helped with Purdue Campus Ministry and wrote a skit called "Just as it is with us". We bought the skit to use, but we are missing page 2. If you could please contact me at 407-569-1177 or via email at brittany.kopp@fcc.edu, we would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Brittany
