The greatest enemy to depth…
More notes from Exponential…from Matt Chandler, pastor at The Village Church in Dallas: “The greatest enemy to depth and real, long lasting transformation is fast growth…”
He spoke of two ways to bring about transformation in your faith community…1) Mechanical and Linear, and 2) Organic and Relational.
He gave the pros and cons of each and then asked: “What if we could figure out how to take the ‘pros’ of each model while avoiding the ‘cons’ of each model?”
He shared with us how they are trying to do this at The Village Church:
1- The air that your church breaths must produce a celebration and expectation of changed lives…(show and give stories of changed lives. Just don’t highlight them, allow them to enter into each other’s story)
2- We’ve created a lot of ‘on ramps’ and ‘off ramps’… (Different places for people to get into mechanical method, and a way to get out…the same for organic. People seem to grow in seasons)
3- Keep flexible… (The mission and end goal is sacred, but nothing else is)
4- Everybody learns differently, everybody applies differently…(this is my thought: This is where the Multiple Intelligences come in)
5- There needs to be a relational aspect to everything…even the mechanical
