My books…

Having moved our office this week (and yes, the new place is ‘quite thrilling’), I have packed and unpacked all my books over the past week or so…

We transported 22 or so Kroger’s Eggs Boxes full of my books and files to the new digs, and for the past two days I’ve been unpacking and thinking about which shelf each book deserves to go on.

Buechner books, of course, have their very own shelf. (Actually a shelf and a half) Other ‘high capacity’ shelves include Nouwen books, Calvin Miller books, L’engle, and CS Lewis. Chaim Potok warranted a ‘top shelf’ along with Flannery O’Connor.

There is the shelf with leadership books, the ‘church planting shelf’, and the shelf dedicated to the authors who made me think differently…Bell, McLaren, Driscoll (I love putting Mclaren’s name next to Driscoll’s, I think it would piss Driscoll off), Hirsch, Yaconelli, Don Everts, and NT Wright.

There’s one whole bookcase set aside for Genesis to Revelation…commentaries, books, weird things about each of the 66 books…including the incredible Cotton Patch Gospels by Clarence Jordan.

And my collection would be so lacking without the classic ‘sports shelf’…highlighted by John Wooden’s ‘They Call Me Coach’.

It’s good to think about the impact some of these authors and their books have had on my life. There has been such a move in my life with God and with my community because of some of these books. (Don’t get me wrong, I don’t equate any of them to the power and authority of Scriptures, which by the way I have two full shelves dedicated to just different translations)

I’m very, very grateful for what I’ve learned and how I’ve been changed because of some of these words surrounding me at my desk…

…I just wish I wouldn’t have waited til I was 30 years old before I really started to read…of course, we’d need another office for storage if that were the case.

They're sitting in the middle of the room on a tall pedestal with a light glowing on them and incense burning 24/7...garlic incense of course...

speaking of books, you haven't updated your 'currently reading' section or given much in the way of recommendations. what's new?
