A movie holiday…

One of our family’s ‘Christmas traditions’ has grown in just the last few years…going to some of the ‘just released’ movies over the holidays. (evidently other families feel the same way if the record-breaking numbers of theatre goers are any indication.)

We love to watch movies…we saw three ‘new ones’ over the past week or so, and I thought I’d give you my reviews…

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
-Really good. Great concept- a baby born old who ages from old to young. Some say this is ‘Forrest Gump Like’, yeah, I guess, but not as funny and with a much different love story element. Brad Pitt & Cate Blanchett are both great…

Slumdog Millionaire
-The best of the three. Extremely well done, creative, I always love movies that teach me things about another culture. It combines an intense look at India’s poverty & ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ (that’s intriguing in itself, isn’t it…) Don’t worry though, there’s no Regis Philbin. This one could very well win Oscar’s Best Picture.

Seven Pounds
-Will Smith is very good in this. The concept of the film is good (it’s hard to say much about this without divulging the plot. And it’s best to not know anything before you step in the theatre) By the way, for any of you that have seen this, what's your opinion on the meaning of the title, 'Seven Pounds'?

I think seven pounds is supposed to reference Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. The "pound of flesh" line that Shylock says.

I personally think that Benjamin Button is Forest Gump like, but I would say it is a cross between Forest Gump and Time Traveler's Wife (a book).

I also agree Slumdog Millionaire is the best of the three.

Back in the day, when my kids were still at home, I would post a list on the fridge of all the movies playing over the Christmas break. My wife and both daughters could sign up for any and as many as they wanted and we (whoever signed up) would go. Lots of good times.
