Current reads…

I was scolded recently for being delinquent in my posting of what I’m currently reading…

So, not only have I updated my blog’s template but below are the books currently being carried around in my backpack that I’m at least 40 pages into…

The Great Emergence, Phyllis Tickle This book is being pushed all over the place. It’s been reviewed in multiple periodicals recently, and has won a few awards. Besides that, my friend Jim Schmotzer said it’s best book he’s read in a very long time, and that my friends is the highest praise.

Jesus Wants to Save Christians, Rob Bell, Don Golden I actually just finished this one for a book club I’m in. I really, really liked it. You may or may not love his style of writing (It’s really written more like a conversation), but I love it. Go ahead you Bell haters…curse my name, just do it on someone else’s blog.

Organizing Genius, Warren Bennis This book is a little older, probably many of you have already read it. It’s about the collaborative creative process. Each chapter gives a different example of a successful example of creative collaboration. The chapter on Walt Disney is fascinating… Thanks to Nate Smith for this recommendation.

Tribes, Seth Godin I received two free copies of this at the Catalyst Conference…I didn’t necessarily connect with the little bit I read, so I put them in a box to go to the used book store when I packed up my office. The very next day I received another copy in the mail as a gift from New Thing Network, (pretty funny I thought), so I figured I better try it out since it seems to be chasing me. It’s good. I’d love to hear any thoughts any of you have on this ‘tribes’ concept…

Potluck, Kim Thomas This one is in preparation for a teaching series we’re doing at Crossings in January and February called ‘Come to the Table’. Kim Thomas is an author and a visual artist. Her work is on all the City on the Hill CDs…

So...what are you reading...what would you recommend to all of us...?

I also just read Jesus Wants to Save Christians and i thought that it was really good as well. Thought provoking and i think worth a second read to really process things.

I also just read two short books by Don Everts called The Fingerless Lady Living in my Head and also The Dirty Beggar Living in my Head. They are good short reads...different...and thought provoking.

I am also currently reading The Jesus Way by Eugene Peterson. Obviously not a brand new book, but i am just getting around to it. It is good...real good. His stuff can take a little while to get through but it tends to be worth it.

Just a brief listing of what has been under my nose recently:

1. Scot McKnight - "The Jesus Creed" - Love God, love people. Good book to challenge how you live out your Christianity.

2. NT Wright - "The Challenge of Jesus" - I like NT Wright's stuff - makes you scratch your head and go "Hmm..."

3. Kent M. Keith - "Jesus Did It Anyway - The Paradoxial Commandments for Christians" - a little simplistic, but worthwhile.

4. Bill Hybels - "Courageous Leadership"

5. John Ortberg - " When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box" - Ortberg. 'Nuff said!

6. Nancy Ortberg - " Looking for God: An Unexpected Journey Through Tattoos, Tofu, and Pronouns" - Ok book - different style and perspective than her husband, but worth the time.

That's all for now. Got some on my Christmas wish list and a couple to start.

Jeff
