Unbelievable...
My family and I left early this morning for West Lafayette, Indiana for a wedding this weekend, (rehearsal tonight, ceremony tomorrow. CONGRATS PATRICK AND SARAH!)Because of leaving during rush hour I decided to take back roads south of Joliet and take state highways all the way into Boilermaker country. It was a good move, in more way than one.
We avoided the I-80/94 traffic (always a good thing) and had a nice relaxing drive down Highway 52 until God, once again, saved the day...
An important thing to know...our gas gauge is broken in our vehicle. It moves back and forth between 'full' & 'empty' every few seconds. You must keep an eye on how many miles you have driven to know when you need gas. Needless to say, my attentiveness lacked this morning...
With everyone but Meghan asleep in the car, and my new Mason Jennings CD providing the soundtrack to our drive, right smack dab in the middle of 'corn field hell' our Trailblazer began to sputter, and within 10-15 seconds completely lost power because, yes, I had run out of gas.
I quickly looked up to see where to pull off and believe it or not, (I'm still not sure I believe it) there was a brand-spanking new Gas City Station in the middle of nowhere. I shifted into neutrual and began to coast, trying not to wake anyone up, hoping I could coast into the station. (If I didn't wake anyone up, no one would know that I'd been stupid enough to run out of gas for the second time in a month.)
Unfortunately, I had to brake for oncoming traffic just before I turned into Gas City, but I was still able to coast into the station, about 15 feet short of the pump. After waking everyone up, Michael and Matthew were able to push us the remaining feet to the pump.
I just kept muttering over and over, "Unbelievable, unbelievable." I couldn't believe that we had run out of gas just a few hundred yards from the only gas station in a 30 mile radius. (If we hadn't, I'd still be walking down the road looking for a gas can)
As this summer continues, as God continues to teach us and grow us, as we continue this adventure with our family in Chicago, I continue to utter the same thing over and over, "Unbelievable".
God is a good...all the time...God is good.
