Still looking for Seabiscuit...

The North American Christian Convention is a great study of church culture. (And yes, before you ask the question, that is a ‘good thing'…sometimes)

In the miles and miles of exhibition booths you gain great insight into the latest trends, learn about the hot fads in marketing, you can get the latest updates on all the colleges and mission organizations, and, of course, eat a lot of free mints on all the display tables. Most of it means nothing unless you’re looking to get a finger on the pulse of the contemporary/evangelical church.

This year’s convention is unique in the sense that it is a joining of the Christian Churches & the Churches of Christ together for one big conference. (If you don’t know the differences between the two, that’s probably a good thing) I just sat in on the first 15-20 of the first main session. There was a nice blend of the a cappella and the instrumental, each song was about unity, there was a lot of applause. All good things.

The best part though was a section from the one of the worship leader’s prayer. He said, “We ask Lord, not for a unity of beliefs and practices, but for a unity of mission and passion.”

If we are able to grasp the depth of that one sentence, of that one prayer, my guess is that the ‘pulse of the church’ would be healthier and stronger than it has been in a long time.

Isn't that what Christ prayed for almost specifically in his giant prayer found at the end of the Gospels?
