Everyone in the world…but us.

Tomorrow morning (Friday) the 2010 World Cup begins in South Africa. And apparently that’s not very important to very many people here in the United States.

I tried to figure out if the opening ceremonies were on TV before the first game between South Africa and Mexico. Evidently, unless I misread, the opening ceremonies are nowhere to be found on U.S. television. They say the opening ceremonies are fabulous for World Cup, probably not to the standard of the Olympics, but still…

And then I just saw a poll on cnn.com. The question was “Will you watch any of the World Cup games?”. Notice it said, ‘any’, not a majority, not a few, just one measly game of the most popular sporting event in the world. 59% said they would not watch ANY of the World Cup.

Even if you’re not into sports, this is an unbelievable cultural event.

I know, I know “We’re Americans, and we have our ‘own football’ daggummit”…I understand that.

I just believe we’re missing out on something very important…

While it's not TV exactly, espn3.com is showing the opening ceremonies at 8:00 am. And I am going to be one of the apparently few Americans who will be watching most of the World Cup games.

Careful what you're asking for... if Southern sports fans latched onto the world cup, pretty soon all the hee-bobs around here would be trying to get the coaches fired, buying 13 year old "prospects" momma's a new house, and whining on sports talk radio 24 hours a day.

Maybe soccer is better when it's more or less a secret.

Good points Greg...

It might be a scary thing intertwining a English culture with a Wartburg culture...

Which Soccer Taco?

I heard they are banning the noise makers. France is whining about loosing due to the noise levels. (Are we surprised?)

I was thinking about getting some for Crossings baptism Sundays. I wonder where you can purchase one?
