Another section of the AT…

I dropped my son Michael and two friends (Johnathan & Jordan) off on Springer Mountain in Georgia yesterday for another round of hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

They did 5 days and 72 miles last year. This year it’s 11 days and maybe double the miles, I’m not sure the exact amount.

Springer Mountain is where the trail begins…(it ends in Maine). They will go from Springer Mountain to Fontana in NC. When they complete this section of the trip and add that to last year’s section, they will have finished 1/10 of the entire trail.

So, what I’m saying is this…I better get used to my son off on the trail for extended periods of time over the next few years, because I’m guessing they’ll keep going til they do the whole thing.

Oh, be still my overprotective father’s heart…

In 1977 at the age of 15, I hiked 60 miles of the AT in 4 days from Erwin to Hwy 70 outside Greeneville and the TN/NC line. Our plan was to go 75 miles in 5 days to Hot Springs, but I sprained my knee on our 17 mile day and limped out 12 miles on our last day. Still great memories.

my father-in-law and some buddies section-hiked the entire trail over a 30 year time period. just a week or two of hiking a summer. they weren't intentionally trying to hike the entire trail at first, but the last 10-15 years or so, they focused on covering the whole trail.
